The #1 Skyr Basque Cheesecake in the World
What a surprise, Reykjavík!
Last week in Europe was all about the full solar eclipse. Spain, Portugal, or Iceland were the most popular destinations for people chasing the eclipses. I went one step further and flew to Greenland to spend a week on a sailboat in the middle of nowhere.
Greenland has jaw-dropping landscapes, glaciers and icebergs. What Greenland does not have is cheesecake. The only village I visited had around 400 people, and at that population size, nobody makes cheesecakes. At least, not for sale.
But I had a layover in Reykjavík on the way back and managed to squeeze in two of them. One went straight into the global ranking.
It was at Tides, on the ground floor of The Reykjavík EDITION. And it was my first Basque skyr cheesecake!
The skyr tradition in Iceland goes back over a thousand years, and I love that Tides leaned into it. Skyr is a cheese, and it carries flavour in a way cream cheese never quite does.
The texture was perfect. The flavour was perfect. It was properly cheesy and at the same time completely fresh, which is the combination I have been chasing since I started this ranking. Orange confit on top for a burst of citrus. Mango sorbet on the side, creamy enough to smooth it all back out.
Honestly, what a delight. Must visit. 5/5 worth the calories.
New #2 on the Global Cheesecake Ranking.
